'SIDEWAYS' / KAYLEE: REVIEW

by emily harris

KAYLEE’s debut EP, Sideways, is finally here! The six track EP, including two unplugged tracks, is an easy escape from the business of your other music. This EP places the listener in a chilled-out and totally vibe state; KAYLEE’s vocals are soft-lending the listener to pay close attention to the lyrics.

The EP starts out with “Time,” which features quick melodic lyrics that have snappy and quick endings. Its repetition of instrumental brings a sense of sincerity and intimacy in the track. Its raw and honest beginnings and lyrics work beautifully with the slow and methodical instrumental track in the back. The EP starts out with an almost silent killer in “Time.”

Following is “Here With Me,” a track that starts slow and bridges into poignant and sharp lyrics. It’s almost jazz-like in its deliberate use of piano and strong baselines — not a sound you would expect on this body of work. It’s very easy to get lost in the chill vibe KAYLEE effortlessly creates.

Listen to Sideways on Spotify. Kaylee · Single · 2020 · 6 songs.

“Forget the Rest” is the third track. The lyrics clearly note a “back and forth” situation and the music mimics it. There is a noticeable repetition, but it mimics that of past songs off the EP. It’s definitely worth listening to a few times over to get the full effect!

Next is the interlude — “8:38.” This interlude dreamily begins with the second hearing of the piano sequence until light guitar strums come in. Her voice fits the dreamy sequence — almost as a whisper.

Next comes the unplugged tracks, “Sober” followed by the last track “bitches broken heart.” Both feature the music styling of an acoustic guitar and cajon drum. These create the vibe of a stripped down and honest track, ultimately leaving the EP on a disparaging and self-reflective note.

The EP takes you through the motions of relationships with others and with yourself. Listen to it anywhere you stream your music !

'FORGET THE REST' / KAYLEE: REVIEW

by lys ziada

KAYLEE’s second single “Forget the Rest” is a ballad of desired relationships that many listeners can connect with.

In this song, KAYLEE addresses falling in love with someone and not realizing how much you’ve fallen until it’s almost immeasurable. She mentions how falling for someone can cause additional insecurities, and the affect it has on you. She also expresses this in the lines “I got what you want girl, I got what you need don’t stress,” where she describes how crushing on someone and showing your love can mean giving away a part of you.

In this melody about confessing love, the harmonies Kaylee includes reflects the emotion of love and unity where different sounds can come together and make something beautiful. Upon listening to this song, listeners can expect a short yet touching expression of emotion that will have you reminiscing about that special someone.

I very much enjoyed the art that Kaylee has provided for us today and am eager to hear more of her work in the future.

'TIME' / KAYLEE: REVIEW

by lys ziada

Upcoming artist KAYLEE has been working diligently on her mark as a new artist and it is greatly reflected in her new singles releasing this September.

Her first single, “Time”, released on September 4th, describes Kaylee’s current relationship with time and what it means to her.

The song is introduced with a beautiful guitar riff as Kaylee begins to highlight the limited time we have in life.

As we progress through the song, we hear Kaylee realizes that although it’s said that “good things take time,” she needs to figure her life out now.

Kaylee expresses her coping method of feeling low and lonely by singing “swinging my body in circles, throwing my hands in the air.” This is something that many of us can relate to and it shows more of Kaylee’s humility by showing her audience that she has problems that need coping as well. This is also shown when she sings, “I’m tired of wasting my time, always waiting to get by,” revealing that life is passing her by in this time of confusion and sadness.

For Kaylee, it’s not enough for her to “act like I’m doing alright.” By singing “just trynna have a good time,” Kaylee shows her audience that she wants to figure out her life so that she can be truly happy.

Overall, Kaylee’s song “Time” shares a positive message to her listeners. Her message that she doesn’t want to wait for things to happen, and wants to take her life and time into her own hands is an inspiration and will undoubtedly have an impact on anyone who resonates with these feelings.
