'ECHOES OF A DREAM' / ANIMAL SUN: REVIEW

Animal Sun’s debut record echoes of a dream is an electrifying collection of interconnected yet self-reliant tracks.

“the divide” opens the album, dreamy yet assertive and just the right amount of ominous. There’s something to be said for what seem to be the two types of album openers in today’s music: the first being an explosive, blazing song hellbent on getting the party started, and the second being a more spacious and otherworldly approach. Animal Sun’s debut record falls beautifully under the latter.

Vocalist and songwriter Steven Blake renders the first lines of “can you hear the thunder?”: “Fate has brought us here, beneath the pale afterglow of my despair.” While the first 45 seconds of the track are approached with a definitive hesitancy, it’s this build up that makes the chorus all the more satisfying.

A tenfold increase in energy is just what the doctor ordered in “looking for trouble.” Drummer William Alton gives the song its unrelenting drive and punch. If the exhilaration that steers the first half of the track wasn’t enough, Blake steps back in with a phenomenal high note that sets in motion almost two minutes of gorgeous chaos. Full volume wouldn’t be loud enough to cover how addicting this song is.

Another standout track, which earned its wings long before the release of the entire album, is “girl in blue.” One look at the band’s Spotify stats reveals this song has been listened to over a million times, and it’s more than easy to understand why: blossoming yet tight guitars, and a massive foundation laid by bassist Adam Gardner.

“more than a friend” showcases another side of Animal Sun: the chorus is reminiscent of early 2010’s pop, with a luminous, alternative twist. “high with you” is almost reminiscent of “the divide,” this time with a delicate familiarity and warmth.

echoes of a dream is a record of alternative gold, and makes no bones about its place in modern music. Impactful bass lines, enthralling vocals, and inventive keyboard parts are just some of the elements which congregate to form what is an absolutely incredible debut record.

'EVERY WORD' / ANIMAL SUN: REVIEW

Animal Sun’s long awaited single “Every Word” is like a musical invitation to the dance floor. On my first listen the sound felt somehow familiar, and I was immediately drawn in. It certainly made me get up and dance as it played on repeat. The sound is energetic with sort of an 80s vibe, which is also reflected in the neon artwork accompanying this single. But the lyrics tell a bit of a darker story about the torment of a love/hate relationship. That feeling where you love someone who you know isn’t good for you, but you just can’t help yourself. I guess you could call it an anthem of complicated relationships with an upbeat twist.

The video for “Every Word” is shot in a retro diner, which complements the classic sound. The band’s frontman, Steven Blake, is on a date with someone who he is clearly not interested in. The awkward hug, the distant stares, and the failed attempts to make it feel right only make it feel more wrong. He is distracted by constant reminders of the one who still owns his heart.

It is obvious that Animal Sun has worked hard to further develop their sound. In my opinion, this is their best single yet. Check it out, and I think you will agree. My hope is that they will find their way back to the Troubadour stage and play this song live for their adoring fans. I look forward to hearing what’s next for this talented and creative band.

'STILL BELIEVE' / ANIMAL SUN: SINGLE REVIEW

Animal Sun is back with “Still Believe,” a ballad lead by gentle, effective vocals set to a backdrop of gorgeous acoustic guitars.

The song is simplistic and light, complimented beautifully by vocal melodies. The first verse is a slow, intimate blend of lyrics, which bursts into the chorus, a plea of “Would you hold me like you still believe?” This plea finds itself in the second verse as well, opened by the line, “We cannot take back what we’ve done.”

These confrontational lines carry the song, and make for more than just any other mindless acoustic tune.

If you find yourself looking for a song that’s equal parts delicate and powerful, take a gander at Animal Sun’s latest single; you’ll find lyrics that resonate, along with calming instrumentals.

Without You, an album by Animal Sun on Spotify

The track is absolutely catchy and filled with energetic vibes. The raw vocals with the thrilling music led to an amalgamation of a fresh perspective to the track. The music seemed intriguing. The song maintained an upbeat energy which was established throughout the duration of the track and the vocals matched perfectly with the melody of the song.

The chorus elevates the song to the very next level and the song gives an alt-pop vibe all the time. The music is exhilarating and influential in nature. One of the significant features of the song is the guitar solo which comes in right after the second chorus. The guitar riff in the track is phenomenal. All the elements of the songs are perfectly blended and the product — the song is definitely an energy booster which gets the listeners to get on their feet and groove!
