New York City based band High Waisted just released their latest singles Free Throw and Firebomb. Firebomb is described as the "feminist rock and roll war cry" to help women realize their self worth. The band went on their most extensive tour throughout the United States to date and we interviewed the band to learn more about them. High Waisted has an empowering energy that is hard to resist!
Your brand new split single Free Throw/Firebomb is out now. How would you describe the singles?
JESSICA DYE: "These singles are a divergence from our typical sound. They are more abrasive with a more forward approach to songwriting and lyrical honesty. I hope they feel like staring directly into the sun, beautiful but dangerous."
What was your inspiration behind these singles?
JESSICA DYE: "These singles are a call and response to feeling inadequate as an artist and specifically a female in music. Some days I feel invincible while on others I can't help but question my direction and self-worth."
Can you tell us how your recent tour went?
JESSICA DYE: "Tour is one big trust fall. We've put our faith in the road, in the kindness of others and in our own hunger for daily adventure. We've sat on the tops of dunes in White Sands at sunset, we swam naked in the Pacific Ocean on my birthday, we've slept in the van, we've slept in the grass and we've gotten up each day in a new city, eager for more. Tour has been beautiful."
In your own words, how would you describe the band’s music?
JESSICA DYE: "We're a rock and roll band. We take inspiration from pop, surf rock and psychedelic music. But mostly our sound will make you feel good."
How do you think your music has grown over the years?
JESSICA DYE: "We're maturing. It's impossible not to when your songwriting is a personal reflection of who you are, what you're overcoming, and your hopes and dreams. Our music will always be melodic and pretty but the undertones may grow more pensive and sorrowful."
If you could collaborate with any other artist who would it be and why?
JESSICA DYE: "I would love to do a record with Ryan Adams in style of Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra."
What are your future goals?
JESSICA DYE: "To release a record that makes people dance and cry. To tour the world. To survive living and working as a full-time artist. To continue devoting free time to creating with people we love."
